GENDER FREEDOM IN OUR SCHOOLS

a community forum for transgender and gender non conforming kids in grades K-8 and their parents/caregivers in WSESU+

WHY ARE WE GATHERING?

All kids deserve to be seen and supported for who they are and to have their gender identity and journey affirmed and celebrated. Many schools in our district have made moves to create spaces that help kids of all genders thrive, and we know there is still a lot of work to be done.

The best way to ensure that our schools are meeting the needs of transgender and gender non conforming kids is by coming together to organize and advocate for change.

Come join Out in the Open and local families for a community forum to connect with other families of trans and gender non conforming kids, talk about how our schools are doing at supporting kids of all genders, and strategize what actions we can take together to ensure our schools are safe, affirming, and celebratory spaces for all kids.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Transgender and gender non conforming kids in grades K-8 who attend public schools in the Windham Southeast Supervisory Union (Brattleboro, Dummerston, Guilford, Putney), as well as Marlboro, or Vernon and their parents and/or caregivers.

We know that the role of parents/caregivers as advocates can vary for many reasons, including the broad age range of kids named here, and encourage families across the K-8 spectrum to come and participate!

WHAT WILL WE DO?

Come hear from parents, caregivers, and kids across the district about what they have done at their school to advocate for trans and gender non conforming students, then participate in facilitated conversation with other kids/parents/caregivers. We will close with open social time to build relationships and connections with each other!

We value the firsthand knowledge, insight, and expertise that kids of all ages have about what they need, and so children of all ages are welcome to participate in the conversation.

Childcare will also be provided. Donations gladly accepted to help cover the cost of care.
