Boycott Hannaford until they join Milk with Dignity
APRIL 30, 2025
Out in the Open is in solidarity with Migrant Justice’s Milk with Dignity campaign, and calls on Hannaford Supermarkets to join the Milk with Dignity campaign and leverage their power as a multinational corporation to advance human rights and improve working conditions for dairy workers.
Because of OITO’s support for Milk with Dignity, we are committed to boycotting Hannaford and their related programs. Until Hannaford joins the Milk with Dignity Program and commits to meeting the standards set forth by the Milk with Dignity Standards Council, OITO will no longer make purchases from Hannaford Supermarkets. We will also cease our use of donations from our local Hannaford stores, which we’ve previously utilized to access snacks and food for programs and events. We have not received grant funds from Hannaford programs but/and we will also abstain from seeking funds from Hannaford’s granting programs.
Out in the Open is focused on shifting power and dismantling systems of oppression that impact LGBTQ+ people in rural areas of Wabanakik / the northeast United States, and we believe that joining forces with organizations at the intersection of all systems of oppression will propel us towards a liberatory future together. Out in the Open stands in solidarity with all marginalized people. We appreciate the work that Hannaford does through initiatives like the CHEF fund, and by being a leader in LGBTQ+ workplace policies. We demand that Hannaford extends their support to the Milk with Dignity campaign and those behind it.
The Milk with Dignity campaign builds a movement of farmworkers and allies calling on dairy companies to ensure respect for human rights in their supply chains by joining the worker-driven Milk with Dignity campaign. Milk with Dignity demands that the corporations of the dairy industry respect and uphold farmworkers’ fundamental human rights as well as redistribute milk profits back to farmworkers and farmers.
Out in the Open is a multiracial, majority working class organization whose mission is to connect rural LGBTQ+ people to build community, visibility, knowledge, and power. We are based in Wabanakik with staff in Windham County, Vermont and Waldo & Southern Penobscot Counties, Maine.
Join us in supporting the Milk with Dignity campaign, farm workers, and all workers in the region! Join an in-person boycott this May Day if you are able, and/or shift your own practices until Hannaford joins the Campaign.
